Colouring Styles; The Fountainhead; TFA

Thu Jul 17, 2008, 3:18 PM
  • Mood: Pleased
  • Listening to: Second Bad Vilbel - Autechre
  • Reading: Nothing at the moment
  • Watching: Nothing, any more. G1, I suppose.
  • Playing: hard to get
  • Eating: n o t h i n g
  • Drinking: Refueling.
Which is a better colouring style for me to work at getting better at, the one in [link] or the one in [link] ?

I like both, and this won't necessarily affect which one I put more effort into, but since I like both I'm curious to know which is the better-liked.

In other news, I finished Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead on Tuesday. It's really fucking GOOD. The end blew me away, and has made me very optimistic.

I'm now going to choose whether to start reading Tacitus' Annals, David Deutsch's The Fabric Of Reality, or Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel. I'll probably decide on one tomorrow.

Also, I watched the season finale of TFA, so NO MOAR TFA FOR ME. ;_; Made me sad when I realised. I will be writing moar fic as a result of it, though; it was an awesome finale. Needs moar Omega :<

I personally like the coloring style in the SS/DM pic more. Probably because I'm just in love with digital coloring.

Also, now you're making me want to read The Fountainhead XD

both are digital. Silver Glory was cleaner and Solution was messier and more painterly, but they're both totally digital colours.

READ IT KSDJFHSKF READ ITTTTTTTTT. IT IS. AMAZING. AND AWESOME AND DID I MENTION IT'S AMAZING. 8>

"Bright in silver glory" is a much better colouring style. The other one looks far too messy and basically looks un-finished and like you'll do the real colouring later.
A messy water colour style could work for some things, but it defiantly doesn't work for your style of line art.

Using solid colours and then going over with the shades and high lights looks much nicer.

I think it would look much better still, if you did colouring without the blur/air brushing and did it in a clean line style. But it's more effort from having have to be more exact and mistakes being visible.

'grats on FH! I got your text and was yay :D I've just got to ';Part 2' where [Fountain Head SPOILERS:] Roark has just turned down the bank offer and has closed his office and is leaving New York to do grunt work. [END SPOILERS]
Very awesome book. I don't understand a bunch of stuff about Roark's views at the moment. Maybe you'd be open to talking about it as long as you are ok with no spoilers.
:iconseien-24:
Yeah. I think that I probably agree with you, but what I'll likely do is try some more in the style of the other one, since when it's done well it looks awesome, and I'm trying to work out how to do it from other people's drawings. Also, I've had lots of practice in the style of Silver Glory, because that's the style I've always been trying for, and Solution is the first time I've tried to implement that style. So maybe it will look better as I get better at it. I'll see, though, as I haven't totally decided to do that anyway.

YES. I would love to, although tbh I'd advise just reading it - there is a full and AMAZING explanation of his views but it's in like, some of the last pages of the book. It blew me away, though, so I would strongly suggest reading it and fangirling later. We can talk about it though if you want.

I actually like the coloring style of Solution.

It's unfinished and a little rough, but I like the sharp lines better with the sharp edges of your line art. Besides that, something a little sharper and smoother is usually better looking on TF's because it accentuates their mechanical nature.

Another suggestion I would make is to deepen the colors that you use. Learn some about color theory in terms of how to use color in terms of composition. Yeah, characters are a certain color and that can't be changed, but there's still a few things that can give the overall picture more of a unified feel.

Also use more of a range in your pallet. It sounds like you plan on going back to finish some of these, so that's fine. But part of that unfinished feel is a lack of deeper shadows and highlights. Shadows can help place the characters more firmly in their environment as well as give depth. Solution feels a little flatter than Silver Glory, but both have an overall lack of visual depth that doesn't feel intentional.

I think Solution looks better, though it's too messy. Reminds me of how my Chinese Pokemon figures are painted. XD

Also, you should read either Infidel or Fabric next. Infidel will probably take you like an evening or two to read, so you may want to try it first. Depends how much time you have, I suppose.

:iconseien-24:
I think I made a mistake colouring Solution - I *think* I should have done all the base colours as block colours, and then done moar shading with the low opacity brush. :/

Yeah, I may well. I'm gonna spend today mostly cleaning and doing maths though, so maybe I'll try reading Infidel tomorrow.

The one with Starscream looks great. Digital coloring is a skill that really helps let me tell ya. People want digital color when they want pro work from you.

But both are terrific pieces and go with what you want. Or learn both.

Ask yourself: What would Starscream do?
:iconseien-24:
That's true. However, I have no intention of going pro, so I'm more concerned with aesthetics.

I'm thinking I'll try a few more in the style of the second - I have ideas for how to improve it - and if it doesn't come off I'll go back to working on the first.
